ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis head coach Sean Maymi announced Thursday (Jan. 9) the hiring of assistant coach Alex Lawson. He will be joining fellow Wolverine assistant coach Trevor Foshey.
Lawson has played on the ATP World Tour professionally since 2016 and has spent time coaching at both Pepperdine and North Carolina State programs.
"We are really excited to add Alex Lawson to our staff," Maymi said. "He has a lot to offer from a playing and doubles perspective. He is coming off the tour and will have a unique insight for our players looking to make that jump to the next level. The team is really going to benefit from having Alex involved.
"I'm really excited to be here in Ann Arbor and join one of the best coaching staffs in college tennis," Lawson said. "I've always admired the culture and tradition of both the Michigan tennis program -- as well as Michigan Athletics -- so to get an opportunity like this is amazing for me. I'm really excited to learn from both Sean and Trevor and see what I can add to the team."
A 2016 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Lawson was a two-time captain for the Fighting Irish. He led the quad to its first-ever round of 16 appearance in the NAA Tournament and its highest team ranking in over a decade. He captured All-America honors in 2016 and was a semifinalist in the NCAA Tournament in doubles play that season, his third appearance in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Lawson remains second all-time in Notre Dame program history in doubles victories. While in South Bend, Lawson was named the ITA Midwest Most Improved Player, while serving on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and with the Rosenthal Leadership Academy.
The Tempe, Ariz., native, first got his coaching start at NC State during the 2021-22 season. He helped take the Wolfpack to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 15 years and the program's highest ranking to date at No. 18.
During the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, Lawson was the assistant coach at Pepperdine University. He helped lead the Waves to back-to-back conference team titles while coaching two players to All-America doubles status. In addition, he was pivotal in recruiting top-ranked players to the University.
Professionally, Lawson has won eight doubles titles with five different partners. He's capitalized on his knowledge of the ATP ranking points systems to optimize his playing schedule to ascend to a career-high ranking of No. 101.
