ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team will travel to the Windy City for the Illini Women's Invitational, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 6-7), at the prestigious Medinah Country Club. Featuring a strong 15-team field, the 54-hole event will be played in a 36-18 format on a par-72 course measuring 6,166 yards.
Notes
• The Illini Women's Invitational will feature 15 teams: Alabama, Auburn, Augusta, Central Florida, Charleston, Illinois, Illinois State, Indiana, LSU, Michigan, Minnesota, San Jose State, SMU, Texas Tech and Wisconsin.
• Seniors Mara Janess and Lauren Sung and freshman Vanessa Zhang lead U-M's starting lineup, with sophomore Mimi Guo and freshman Reese Ng rounding out the Wolverine five. Sophomore Thomasine Bartholdson will also compete as an individual.
• After opening the season as an individual at the Wolverine Invitational, Janess earned a lineup spot at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational, where she paced the Wolverines with back-to-back 71s. Her career-low 142 (-2) 36-hole total secured a seventh-place finish in the rain-shortened event.
• With consecutive rounds of 68 (-3), Sung posted a career-low 209 (-4) total at the Wolverine Invitational to finish runner-up in the 81-player field, marking the first top-five finish of her career. The back-to-back 68s also gave her the 12th and 13th sub-par rounds of her career, including her fifth and sixth rounds in the 60s.
• Starting her collegiate career as an individual at the Wolverine Invitational, Zhang made an immediate impact, tying for 16th with rounds of 72-74-75 for a 221 total. Earning her first start at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational, she continued her strong play with a second straight top-20 finish, tying for 17th with a 145 (+1, 73-72) tally. Through two events, Zhang is averaging 73.20 strokes per round.
• Bartholdson opened the season with a career-low 220 (78-69-73) at the Wolverine Invitational, earning her first career top-20 finish with a tie for 14th. Her second-round 69 (-2) marked the first sub-70 round of her career. She returns to the starting lineup this week at Medinah.
• The Wolverine Invitational offered a preview of the U-M Golf Course, which will host one of six NCAA regional sites in May — marking the second time in four years under head coach Jan Dowling. Now in her 13th season at the helm, Dowling has guided Michigan to eight NCAA postseason appearances, including four trips to the NCAA Finals.
