
Burke Records 2000th Career Assist in Loss to No. 7 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wisc. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell to No. 7-ranked Wisconsin in a back-and-forth three-set battle (22-25, 22-25, 20-25) on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5) at UW Field House.
Michigan (11-4, 1-3 Big Ten) was led by setter Morgan Burke, who tallied a double-double to help reach 2,000 assists in her career. She recorded 29 assists and 11 digs, with her 20th assist allowing her to become the 10th Wolverine in program history to reach the mark. Allison Jacobs led the Wolverines with 15 kills, while Serena Nyambio recorded four blocks.
Wisconsin (11-1, 4-0 Big Ten) opened the match with a kill, but kills from Ella Demetrician and Jacobs put Michigan in front. Wisconsin tied the match at two, and the teams went back and forth over the first 20 points -- with no lead larger than two. There were also six total tied scores. U-M went on a service run led by Demetrician, where three different Wolverines tallied kills to put U-M up, 14-10. After two Wisconsin points, Jacobs recorded a kill to put U-M up, 15-12, at the media break. The Badgers took their first timeout after a block by Nyambio and Burke, but controlled the rest of the set after finishing on an 11-4 run, including four of the last five points to win, 25-22.
The second set had 13 tied scores and five lead changes. Back-to-back kills from Demetrician tied the match at five, and a block from Nyambio and Demetrician gave U-M the lead early. Wisconsin tied the match after a service error, but the Wolverines built a three-point lead with kills from both middle blockers. The Badgers followed closely and used a 5-1 run to take a 12-11 lead to force a Michigan timeout. Jacobs tied the match at 12 out of the timeout, and the teams traded the next 16 points until the score reached 20-20. Wisconsin took the next three points as Michigan took another timeout. Nyambio recorded a kill out of the timeout, but the Badgers took two of the final three points to win the second set, 25-22
In the third set, both teams were well matched once again -- seeing 10 tied scores and four lead changes. Wisconsin opened the match on a 4-1 run. Michigan tied it at six after kills from Jacobs and Demetrician. The Badgers took another lead with a four-point run, going up 12-10 and forcing a Wolverine timeout. Michigan responded out of the timeout and scored the next three points with two kills from Jenna Hanes and one from Lydia Johnson. Both teams then traded the next few points until a 4-0 run by Wisconsin put the Badgers up, 23-18. Hanes and Johnson combined on a block, but Wisconsin earned match point with a kill. An attack error gave U-M a chance, but the Badgers took the final point of the set with a block.
The Wolverines will return home to kick off a two-game weekend on Friday (Oct. 10) against Indiana at Cliff Keen Arena at 7 p.m. The match will is slated to stream on B1G+.
