ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Michigan State (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) to retain the state flag on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 16) at Crisler Center.
Michigan (19-8, 9-7 Big Ten) used a balanced offensive attack with all six hitters finishing with at least five kills. Allison Jacobs and Cymarah Gordon led with eight apiece, while Ella Demetrician added seven. Jenna Hanes hit error-free (6-for-11) and posted six blocks. Setters Morgan Burke and Camille Edwards guided the Wolverines to a .312 hitting percentage with 16 and 12 assists. Maddi Cuchran recorded 10 digs, including her 1,000th career dig, which resulted in a kill.
A tight first set featured 12 ties and four lead changes. After MSU (18-8, 8-8 Big Ten) took a 12-11 lead, Michigan responded with a 6-1 run highlighted by a Lydia Johnson kill to break a 13-13 tie, an ace from Hanes, and a block from Johnson and Serena Nyambio. The Spartans closed within 22-19, but Michigan finished the frame with kills from Jacobs and Hanes and an MSU error to take it 25-19.
The second set mirrored the first with 10 ties and six lead changes. Michigan used a 4-0 run to turn a 13-12 deficit into a 16-13 lead, sparked by a Cuchran kill off a dig. Hanes added a block and a kill during the run. MSU twice trimmed the margin to one, but key blocks from Hanes and a late Demetrician kill put U-M up 21-19. Michigan closed on a 4-0 run, with Nyambio helping seal another 25-19 win.
Michigan controlled the third set from the outset, opening on a 4-0 run with three kills from Gordon. Johnson added back-to-back kills to extend the lead to 8-2. MSU cut it to 10-8, but a block from Johnson and Hanes helped regain momentum. After the Spartans pulled within 13-10, Michigan answered with a 6-2 surge fueled by kills from Nyambio and Jacobs to go up 19-12. The Spartans made one last push to 23-18 before a Gordon swing, overturned on review, sealed the 25-18 set and the sweep.
The Wolverines hit the road next, traveling to Washington on Thursday (Nov. 20) for a 7 p.m. PT matchup at Alaska Airlines Arena. The match will stream on B1G+.
