BOSTON, Mass. -- The nation's leading goal scorer, Will Horcoff, notched a power-play goal in overtime to lead the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team to a 4-3 win over Harvard on Saturday night (Nov. 29) inside the Bright-Landry Hockey Center to secure the weekend sweep. U-M closes out non-conference play for the 2025-26 campaign with a 9-1 record.
Freshman Jack Ivankovic started his 18th game in the blue paint for Michigan (15-3-0), and the netminder turned aside 29 of 32 shots faced from a resilient Harvard squad. Ivankovic had a clean sheet through 46 minutes, until a three-goal flurry in the third period forced the game into overtime.
Michigan received a power-play chance with 3:16 remaining in the extra session after Hage was taken down. Sixty-one seconds later, Horcoff slipped a no-look shot through the Harvard goalie's five-hole from a tough angle near the goal line to send the Maize and Blue faithful home happy with a 4-3 overtime win. Hage and Hughes assisted on Horcoff's second goal of the evening, and fourth of the weekend. Horcoff, the nation's top goal-scorer, used a pair of two-goal games to reach a goal-per-game pace through 18 contests.
A scoreless first period was characterized by missed opportunities on the power play. U-M started the night with an unsuccessful chance before taking a pair of penalties toward the middle of the period to give Harvard four minutes of time with the man-advantage. The Crimson (5-3-1) also failed to convert, but they used the possession time to work on tilting the ice in their favor.
The Wolverines turned to their big guns for an offensive spark as the game neared its midpoint, and the visitors finally opened the scoring at 8:16 of the middle frame following a strong play on the boards by Michael Hage to slip a pass out to T.J. Hughes with space to operate in the right circle. The captain patiently weighed his options before finding Horcoff posted up at the top of the crease. The rangy sophomore was relentless as he used a second effort to bury his 17th goal of the season and give Michigan a 1-0 lead.
Later in the period, Hage showed off his skill with a highlight-reel goal at 15:40 that made it 2-0 in favor of the Wolverines. After gliding into the offensive zone on the left flank and using his frame to protect the puck, the sophomore quickly transferred the puck onto his forehand as he carved in toward the crease to flip a shot past the netminder and double the team's lead. Freshman defenseman Drew Schock assisted on Hage's 10th marker of the season.
Moments after freshman center Cole McKinney laid his body on the line to block a shot and send the play in the other direction, his classmate Aidan Park broke into the Harvard zone on an odd-man rush and opted to shoot. The freshman sniped a short-side shot off the post to bump the score to 3-0 with two minutes left in the period of the long change. Senior Kienan Draper recorded the lone assist on Park's strike.
Momentum shifted quickly as the teams returned to action for the third period. Harvard dented the twine at 6:30 with a crafty redirection from the netfront area that cut the deficit to 3-1.
Horcoff was whistled for tripping at 11:24 to activate the Crimson's power-play unit. Just under one minute later, the home team netted its first power-play goal of the weekend to make it 3-2 at 12:21.
Another infraction on the Wolverines at 13:34 came back to bite the Wolverines. Once again, it took less than a minute for the home team to capitalize with a power-play tally. This time, a shot from distance worked its way through traffic to find the back of the net and tie the game at 3-3.
Ivankovic made one of his finest saves of the contest to preserve the tie with 33 seconds left; the game was tied up after 60 minutes as the teams readied for five minutes or less of 3-on-3 action.
With the win, U-M wraps up the season's 10-game non-conference slate with a 9-1 record. This year's group is just the 10th in program history to reach 15 wins through 18 games.
Next week, Michigan will finish out the first half of the season with a home-and-home series against Michigan State. Friday night's (Dec. 5) contest will be broadcast live from Munn Ice Arena on Big Ten Network, with puck drop set for 8:30 p.m. Saturday's (Dec. 6) series finale at Yost Ice Arena is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
