ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team (15-8, 5-7 Big Ten) heads to the East Coast for a two-match weekend, facing Rutgers on Friday (Nov. 7) at 7 p.m. at Jersey Mike's Arena before traveling to College Park to meet Maryland on Sunday (Nov. 9) at noon in the Stephen M. Schanwald Pavilion. Both matches will stream live on B1G+.
Notes
• The Wolverines split last weekend against two ranked opponents. On Friday (Oct. 31), Michigan took the second and fourth sets before clinching the fifth, 15-12, to defeat No. 19 Penn State. On Sunday (Nov. 2), U-M hit .300 and .560 in the first two sets before No. 10 Purdue rallied to win the match 3-2.
• Michigan's last home match drew a program-record 12,707 fans against Nebraska in a sold-out Crisler Center -- the largest volleyball crowd in the state of Michigan. The previous school record was 8,137.
• As a team, Michigan ranks in the top five in the Big Ten in four categories and the top half in nine of 15 NCAA-tracked categories. The Wolverines sit fifth in kills per set (13.58), total kills (1,127), total assists (1,032) and hitting percentage (.281). U-M's hitting percentage ranks 15th nationally and its kills-per-set mark is 43rd.
• Jenna Hanes has been errorless over her last seven matches, playing in 28 sets. She has totaled 41 kills and no errors on 69 swings during that span, hitting a team-leading .594. Hanes has also added 30 blocks, including a career-high seven against Illinois. She is hitting .462 overall, leading all Big Ten players with 50 or more kills, though not qualified for the NCAA leaderboard.
• Serena Nyambio is hitting .415 with 1.92 kills per set and 1.28 blocks per set -- all career highs. She has 159 kills this season, surpassing her totals from her first two years combined, and is 44 kills away from topping last year's mark. Nyambio has reached double-digit kills in three of her last seven matches and has recorded at least two kills and two blocks in every match this year, with highs of 17 kills and 11 blocks.
• Cymarah Gordon has earned a starting spot in recent weeks, appearing in the team's last five matches and starting the last four. Over that stretch, she has totaled 40 kills, including a career-high 13 against Penn State, and clinched each set win in that match with the final kill in the second, fourth, and fifth sets. Gordon has also added 17 blocks across the five matches.
• In Big Ten play, Allison Jacobs ranks third in points (378.5) and total attacks (862), fourth in total kills (327) and attacks per set (10.51), and fifth in kills per set (3.99) and points per set (4.62). Nationally, she ranks 50th in points per set and 64th in kills per set. Jacobs has also shown growth in serving and blocking, matching her career total of 26 aces this season and setting new career highs in solo and assisted blocks, averaging 0.54 per set.
• With the 15th-best hitting percentage in the nation, junior setter Morgan Burke continues to guide the Michigan offense. Burke has led U-M in assists in 66 of the last 67 matches and has started 66 straight. She has 584 assists this season — more than three times any other Wolverine -- while ranking second in digs (178) and adding 20 aces. She joins Nyambio and Maddi Cuchran as the only Wolverines to appear in every set this year.
• Rutgers enters the weekend at 11-13 overall and 2-10 in Big Ten play. The Scarlet Knights went 9-3 in non-conference competition and own conference wins over Maryland and Ohio State. Michigan is 13-0 all-time against Rutgers, though last year's meeting went five sets.
• Maryland is 8-14 this season and 1-11 in Big Ten play. The Terrapins' lone conference win came at home against Rutgers in four sets. Michigan holds a 16-3 all-time record against Maryland, winning the past two meetings, though the Terrapins claimed the last matchup in College Park.
