NORMAN, Okla. -- Despite a season-high score of 326.400, the No.6-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team finished second of three teams against No. 1 Oklahoma (327.700) and No. 14 Simpson College (285.550) on Saturday (Feb.15) at McCasland Field House.
The Sooners led the entire meet, but the Wolverines claimed four event titles and seven podium finishes. OU had a lead as large as 3.500 points following the fourth rotation, but big U-M performances reduced the deficit in the final rotation. Fred Richard earned a pair of event titles for the third time this season.
How it Happened
Pommel Horse
The Wolverines opened the meet with Zach Granados leading off for Michigan. His score of 13.2500 tied his season high. Falls from Kyle Walchuk were costly, but a 14.000 from Aaronson Mansberger and a 13.900 from Richard were good for second- and third-place finishes. U-M trailed by 2.85 points after the first rotation.
Still Rings
The team's first title of the day came from Paul Juda's 14.250, tying his season-high score. Richard (13.700) and Rithik Puri (13.650) also tied their season highs, and a season-high team event score closed the gap. The Maize and Blue trailed by 1.500 points heading to rotation three.
Floor Exercise
Charlie Larson earned his third floor title of the season with a 14.300, just 0.050 points shy of his season high. The Sooners took second and third place, giving them a 0.850 edge on the event and a 2.600-point lead (164.100-161.500) at the halfway point of the meet.
Parallel Bars
Richard earned his first title of the day on the parallel bars, tying his season high of 14.450. Logan McKeown earned a second-place finish with a score of 13.950, but a score of 56.050 gave Oklahoma its largest lead. The Wolverines trailed 220.150-216.650 with two rotations left.
High Bar
Richard earned his second title with a 14.300, while Pierce Wolfgang finished fifth with a season-high score of 13.750. The Wolverines were able to chip away at the deficit heading into the last rotation, with OU leading by just 1.850 points (272.450-270.600).
Vault
U-M concluded the meet on vault, with David Wolma's third-place finish (14.100) leading the way for the Wolverines. A season-high team score of 55.800 was not enough to close the gap, and Michigan finished the meet in second place.
Up Next
The Maize and Blue will get a break before returning to competition on Saturday, March 15, when they play host to Ohio State for a 2 p.m. meet at Cliff Keen Arena.
