
Michigan Routs Central Michigan in Midweek Contest

DETROIT, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team led wire-to-wire as it routed Central Michigan 19-5 on Wednesday (Feb. 19) at Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse.
The Wolverines (2-1) outshot CMU 43-10 and had 10 goal scorers, including six multi-goal scorers. Junior Calli Norris had six points with four goals and two assists, while Julia Schwabe had three goals. Freshman Emma Burke led the draw-control team with seven wins and Jill Smith had five draw-control wins and two goals. Freshman Truus van Wees netted two goals on three shots and won two draws.
Defensively, Peyton Shreves and Rowan Clancy each had two caused turnovers and Megan Minturn had four ground balls, while Taylor Cullen had three ground balls. Erin O'Grady made four saves and Maya Santa-Maria made one.
Michigan opened the game on a 4-0 run with two goals from Norris in the first five minutes and followed it up with a three-goal run with back-to-back goals from Smith to take a 7-1 lead with 2:33 left to play in the first quarter. The Chippewas (0-3) netted their second goal with less than a minute to play in the opening quarter, but it was all Wolverines for the rest of the first half as they added six goals, four of which came in the second quarter, to take a 13-2 halftime lead.
Norris led U-M with five points over the first 30 minutes, including three goals and two assists, while Schwabe added three goals and Ceci Stein had two goals. Smith notched five draw-control wins along with two goals, and Emma Bradbury and Burke each had four draw-control wins.
Norris opened the second half with her fourth goal of the game and van Wees netted her first career goal with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter to give U-M a 15-3 advantage. The clock continued to run as Michigan outscored Central 2-1 over the final five minutes and took a 16-3 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Chippewas tallied the first goal of the fourth quarter, but van Wees answered with her second of the day and Stella Nolan added two as the Wolverines earned the decisive victory.
U-M next will take on Marquette at noon on Sunday (Feb. 23) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
