MANAHAWKIN, N.J. -- University of Michigan senior/junior Abby Tamer has been selected as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's 2024 Division I National Scholar-Athlete, the organization announced on Thursday (Feb. 20).
The NFHCA National Scholar-Athlete honor is presented annually to the Division I first-team All-American undergraduate who earns the highest cumulative grade-point average through the first semester of the current academic year. Tamer is the first Wolverine to garner the NFHCA's top academic award.
Tamer maintained a 3.92 GPA in the applied exercise science program through the Michigan School of Kinesiology. She has already been accepted to U-M's Master of Sport Management program for the 2025-26 academic year. Tamer earned her third NFHCA Scholar of Distinction accolade earlier this month and is a three-time NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team and two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
She was an NFHCA first team All-American last fall, becoming the 16th different U-M player in program history to garner first-team honors and the seventh in 10 seasons. She led the Wolverines in scoring with 12 goals, 14 assists and 38 points -- career highs in all three categories -- and finished the season ranked eighth nationally with 0.65 assists per game and 12th with 1.84 points per game.
One of three team captains this season, Tamer was one of eight unanimous selections on the All-Big Ten first team and is a two-time NFHCA All-Region honoree.
Tamer returned to the Wolverines lineup after Olympic redshirting the 2023 season and playing with Team USA in Paris, where she led the red, white and blue with two goals. She is Michigan field hockey's first-ever Olympian. She was named to the 2025 U.S. Women's National Team last month.
