
U-M Falls to No. 14 Michigan State in First Home Loss of Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team lost 75-62 to in-state rival No. 14-ranked Michigan State in its first home loss of the season on Friday (Feb. 21) at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
Vladislav Goldin scored 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting, grabbing five rebounds. Nimari Burnett had 12 points and Danny Wolf added 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Second Half
Michigan (20-6, 12-3 Big Ten) regained the lead, 42-40, at 16:26 on two consecutive field goals from Goldin after Michigan State (22-5, 13-3 Big Ten) started the half with two three-pointers. MSU scored six straight points to lead by four at 13:14 before Burnett's three-pointer cut the lead to one.
The Spartans made three three-pointers to extend their lead to eight, 57-49, going on to lead by 11 with just under eight minutes to go. Michigan failed to make a field goal over a three-minute span before a Wolf layup ended the skid. Goldin's dunk and second-chance layup cut the Michigan State lead to three with 5:37 remaining. While the Spartans went on a nine-point run to end the game, Michigan went scoreless for the final four minutes, eventually falling by 13 points.
Michigan State outscored Michigan 41-24 in the second half. U-M shot 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) from the free-throw line, while Michigan State made 10 of 15 (66.7 percent). The Wolverines were outrebounded 34-25, with the Spartans grabbing 14 offensive rebounds.
First Half
Early Michigan turnovers gave the Spartans an early 13-6 advantage with 14:09 to go. Wolf ended a two-minute scoreless period for the Wolverines with three consecutive field goals, kicking off a 15-0 run to give U-M a seven-point lead, 23-16, punctuated by a Burnett fast break three-pointer. Michigan held MSU scoreless for more than five minutes, causing the Spartans to shoot 1-for-12 and commit three turnovers over the duration.
Michigan had four turnovers over the course of two minutes, but maintained its lead as Michigan State committed four of its own over the following two minutes. The Wolverines turned the momentum from a Tre Donaldson three-pointer into a forced turnover to lead by eight, 33-25, with two minutes to go. Both teams traded baskets in the final minutes of the half, with Michigan taking a 38-34 lead into halftime.
Nine Wolverines scored in the first half, shooting 14-for-26 (53.8 percent), compared to Michigan State's 12-for-31 (38.7 percent). Michigan had four steals in the first half, forcing nine Spartans turnovers, with seven of its own.
What's Next
Michigan will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Cornhuskers on Monday (Feb. 24) at 7 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast live on FS1.
