
Richard Takes Silver at Winter Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Three current and former Wolverines of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team were in action at the USA Gymnastics Winter Cup Friday through Sunday (Feb. 21-23) at the Kentucky International Convention Center, with junior Fred Richard's second-place finish leading the effort.
Richard (79.900) sat in second after the first day of competition, just 0.500 points behind leader Riely Loos of Stanford to advance to session two. His floor score of 14.050 was the best of the session, while his high bar score of 13.350 was third-best.
Assistant coach Crew Bold also advanced to session two, placing in fifth on the high bar (13.200) and 11th on the floor exercise (13.250). Javier Alfonso competed on the floor exercise, still rings, parallel bars, and high bar, with his score 12.900 being his best.
After day two, Bold took the high bar title with a score of 26.900 with a strong score of 13.700 in the second session. On the floor exercise, he placed eighth (26.900).
Richard earned a second-place finish with a total score of 159.000, while Loos (160.850) and Taylor Christopulos of Nebraska (158.400) round out the top three. Richard took third on the parallel bars (27.650) and the high bar (26.650), and finished fifth on the floor exercise (27.250).
Richard and Paul Juda, who did not compete, were named to the USA Gymnastics Men's Senior National Team.
The Maize and Blue will return to team action on March 15, hosting No. 3 Ohio State at 2 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena. The team will honor its nine seniors and graduate students following the meet.
