
Michigan Earns Two Medals on Opening Night of Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team started strong at the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 26) at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. After two events, the Wolverines are tied for third with Ohio State (110 points), while defending champion Indiana leads with 116 points.
U-M opened the meet with a silver medal in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Jack Wilkening, Ozan Kalafat, Tyler Ray and Bence Szabados broke the program record with a time of 1:22.08 to take second overall.
Following the team diving event, the team of Eitan Ben-Shitrit, Colin Geer, Gal Groumi and Eduardo Moraes hit the pool for the 800-yard freestyle relay. In a back-and-forth battle, Michigan was edged out by USC and Ohio State to take bronze with a mark of 6:11.10.
Michigan will return to the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Thursday (Feb. 27) for the second day of the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. CST with the finals commencing at 5 p.m. CST. Thursday will feature heats of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM and 50-yard freestyle and the one-meter dive.
