ANN ARBOR, MICH. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Western Michigan in the final non-conference match of the regular season on Friday (Feb. 28) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Broncos took the doubles point to gain an early lead, but the Wolverines won four straight singles matches to clinch the team score before the teams played out the final two matches.
Senior Patorn Hanchaikul put Michigan on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jack Davison at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, junior Nicholas Steiglehner recorded matching 6-3 sets in his win over Oscar Corwin to put Michigan on top 2-1. Sophomore Alex Cairo notched a win at No. 6 as he took down Matej Kajzer 6-4, 6-2.
Senior Will Cooksey clinched the team win with 7-5, 6-2 wins over Ashton Adesor at No. 2.
Anton Arzhankin upset No. 55 Benjamin Kittay at No. 1 singles with 6-4, 6-4 wins. Junior Bjorn Swenson ended the night on a high note as he toppled Brogan Pierce in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.
Michigan begins Big Ten play next weekend, hosting first-year conference opponents Oregon and Washington. On Friday (March 7), the Wolverines host the Ducks at 6 p.m., and on Sunday (March 9), they host the Huskies at 11 a.m.
