STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team fell to top-ranked Penn State 39-0 on Friday evening (Feb. 7) at the Nittany Lions' Bryce Jordan Center. It was Michigan's first shutout loss since 2010.
The Wolverines hung tight in several matches before the intermission break with four decision losses over the first five bouts. Sophomore Sergio Lemley, ranked 11th at 141 pounds, dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 3 Beau Bartlett, trading two Michigan escapes with a PSU reversal in the third but fell on 1:10 riding time.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Gilcher fell to No. 3 Shayne Van Ness 7-1, while senior/junior Zack Mattin dropped a 7-2 decision to top-ranked Tyler Kasak at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively -- both on a takedown apiece in the first and seconds periods.
Penn State surged further ahead with three straight bonus wins after the break -- PSU had four total in the dual -- and earned decision wins in top-10 matchups at the last two weights. Graduate student Jacob Cardenas, ranked second at 197 pounds, suffered his first loss this season with a 3-2 tiebreaker defeat against fourth-ranked Josh Barr. Cardenas escaped eight seconds into the first tiebreaker, then nearly rode out the second but allowed a reversal out of a scramble with five seconds on the clock.
Graduate student Josh Heindselman, ranked ninth at heavyweight, fell to second-ranked Greg Kerkvliet -- the reigning NCAA champion -- by a 6-0 margin on a first-period takedown and second-period reversal. Heindselman's only two losses on the season have come against the nation's No. 1- and No. 2-ranked heavyweights.
The Wolverines (5-5, 2-4 Big Ten) will close out the Big Ten Conference portion of its dual-meet slate next Sunday (Feb. 16) when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., to take on rival Michigan State at noon at Jenison Field House. The dual will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
