TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of Michigan softball team put runners in scoring position every inning but struggled to produce runs in a 2-0 defeat against Georgia Southern in its USF-Rawlings Invitational finale on Sunday morning (Feb. 9) at USF Softball Stadium. U-M outhit the Eagles, 9-5, but left 10 total runners stranded on base.
Georgia Southern scored its runs in the bottom of the second and third innings -- both times on a walk and two singles to the outfield.
Michigan threatened immediately when junior second baseman Indiana Langford reached on a one-out single in the first inning, stole second and advanced to third on a flyout. The Wolverines also advanced runners to third base in the third and fifth frames; in the former, U-M put runners on the corners after reaching on a fielding error and Langford bunt, but a 6-3 double play brought a sudden end to the rally.
The Wolverines again threatened in the seventh inning with singles from senior outfielder Ellie Sieler and freshman first baseman Lauren Putz. With two outs, junior third baseman Maddie Erickson yanked a liner just foul down the leftfield line before striking out to end the game.
Sieler, Langford and Putz all posted two hits at the top of the Michigan order.
Freshman RHP Haley Ferguson (0-1) took the loss in her first collegiate start with four hits and two walks allowed over 2.2 innings. Senior RHP Lauren Derkowski entered in the third and finished the game for the Wolverines, allowing one hit and adding four strikeouts over the final 3.1 innings.
Michigan (2-3) travels to Athens, Ga., next weekend for a four-game set at the Red & Black Showcase. U-M will open play with a 6 p.m. slate against host Georgia on Thursday (Feb. 13) at Turner Softball Stadium. Michigan will close out the weekend with a road game against Georgia State at noon on Sunday (Feb. 16) at Bob Heck Softball Complex in Atlanta, Ga.
