
Michigan Finishes Second at Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the Big Ten Championships, finishing second with 1,148 points on Saturday (March 1) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Indiana took the team title with 1,579 points.
The Maize and Blue placed eight swimmers into championship finals in the final preliminary session of the meet. Cameron Gammage also punched his ticket to the consolation final in the platform dive.
Gammage tallied a score of 313.35 to finish 10th overall and get U-M off to a strong start.
In the swimming pool, Jon Jøntvedt started the final session of the week with a seventh-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, posting a time of 14:53.99. In the 200-yard backstroke, Jack Wilkening took fourth with a time of 1:40.34. Inbar Danziger finished seventh with a mark of 1:42.85 while Eitan Ben-Shitrit grabbed eighth with a time of 1:43.76.
Gal Groumi and Bence Szabados represented the Maize and Blue in the 100-yard freestyle. Groumi finished fifth with a mark of 42.01 seconds and Szabados secured eighth overall with a time of 42.63. Ozan Kalafat took eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:53.10.
Michigan's best individual swim of the night came in the 200-yard butterfly. Colin Geer outraced the field and clocked a time of 1:39.58 to capture the Big Ten title. Michigan has won the event in back-to-back years after Groumi won in 2024. Tyler Ray also reached the podium, taking bronze with a time of 1:40.55.
The team of Geer, Groumi, Szabados and Wilkening wrapped up the meet with a bronze medal in the 400-yard freestyle relay, logging a time of 2:48.91. U-M earned a top-three finish in all five relays during the meet.
Up next, select Michigan swimmers will aim for NCAA Championships qualification at the Last Chance Meet on Sunday, March 9. Location and start time are to be determined.
