
Five-Goal Binge Secures Come-From-Behind Win Over No. 21 USC

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team scored the final five goals of the game to complete an 11-9 comeback victory over No. 21 USC on Thursday evening (March 20) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (6-3, 1-1 Big Ten) trailed by as many as four goals on two occasions before rattling off five straight goals over the final 13 minutes of action to secure the victory over the Trojans (7-3, 0-2 Big Ten). Michigan was led offensively by Kaylee Dyer, who had five points with two goals and three assists, while Jill Smith and Ava Class both recorded hat tricks and Julia Schwabe had three assists and one goal.
Schwabe's four points brought her career total to 101 as she became the ninth Wolverine to reach the century mark.
Defensively, Grace Callahan had three ground balls and two caused turnovers and assisted on a Schwabe goal in the second quarter. Taylor Cullen added two ground balls and Smith, Schwabe and Maya Rutherford had one caused turnover each.
The draw unit was led by Emma Burke, who had her second career double-digit draw-control win contest with 11, while Smith had two draw-control wins. Burke's 11 wins outdrew USC, which won 10 draws on the evening.
In goal, senior Erin O'Grady made 11 saves, including seven in the second half and four down the stretch.
USC outscored Michigan 5-1 in the first 11 minutes of the contest before Smith drove and brought U-M within three to end the first quarter. Callahan brought the ball upfield and passed to Schwabe, who buried the goal to start the second-quarter scoring.
The Trojans answered with a pair of goals to go up 7-3 with 6:20 left in the second quarter. Michigan earned a free-position opportunity with under one minute left in the half, and Calli Norris scored as U-M went into the locker room trailing 7-4.
Michigan was the first to score out of the halftime break when Dyer circled the cage to bring U-M within two. USC used a free-position opportunity to bring the lead back to three with 7:39 left in the third quarter before Schwabe fed Emma Bradbury with a minute left in the third stanza to cut the USC lead to 8-5.
The Trojans opened the fourth quarter with what turned out to be their final goal. Michigan then went on its five-goal run, including two from Smith and Class, to secure the win.
U-M continues Big Ten action Thursday (March 27) when it travels to Ohio State for a 6 p.m. contest at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.
