SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan team sat in a four-way tie for ninth place after the first round of the Desert Mountain Collegiate men's golf tournament Saturday (March 8) at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course. Play was suspended by darkness with the 17-team field about halfway through the second round; action is scheduled to resume Sunday at 7:30 a.m. MST with the final round immediately to follow.
After the start of play was delayed two-plus hours due to cold, senior Hunter Thomson led the way for the host Wolverines in the opening round, shooting a one-under-par 71 with three birdies and two bogeys on the par-72, 7,107-yard layout. It was his team-best 14th sub-par round of the season.
Playing in the same group, freshmen RJ Arone and Dean Muratore had rounds of 74 and 75, respectively, highlighted by three consecutive birdies by Muratore on holes 13-15. Senior Yuqi Liu was three over par after three holes before playing even the rest of the way with the aid of three birdies for his 75, while fifth-year senior Ben Hoagland rounded out the starters with a 78.
Fifth-year senior Jack O'Donnell posted the top score among Michigan's four individual competitors, using three birdies to card a 75, while redshirt freshman Caden Pinckes had four birdies en route to his 77.
Michigan was tied with Eastern Michigan, Southern Illinois and VCU at 295, two shots behind eighth-place Minnesota. No. 27-ranked Mississippi State held the first-round lead at 275 (13 under par), nine shots clear of 10th-ranked Utah. Mississippi State teammates Garrett Endicott and Ugo Malcor both made seven birdies and two bogeys to share the individual lead with five-under 67s, and 27 of the 96 players in the field were under par after 18 holes.
