Thomson Paces Wolverines to Seventh at Desert Mountain Collegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Led by his sixth sub-par 54-hole tally of the season, senior Hunter Thomson's 212 (-4) paced the University of Michigan men's golf team to an 878-team total today (Sunday, March 9) and a seventh-place finish at the Desert Mountain Collegiate on the Outlaw Course.
After a year away from its annual spring break tournament in Scottsdale, U-M opened Saturday's 36-hole day with a 295 as Thomson led with a 71 (-1), his 14th sub-par tally of the season. While the rest of the 17-team field began the day's second 18, play was called due to darkness with the Wolverines tied for ninth.
Returning Sunday morning, Thomson continued his strong play with an even-par 72, while freshman Dean Muratore's 73 yielded a 298 as the Maize and Blue slipped into a tie for 10th after 36 holes. Remaining on the course, U-M caught fire in the final round. With 22 birdies from the starting five, including six from Muratore, U-M posted one of five sub-par team totals (285, -3) of the round to move up three spots and finish seventh (878).
Closing as the top Wolverine for the eighth time in nine events, Thomson's sixth sub-par 54-hole total (212, -4; 71-72-69) guided him to his sixth top-10 finish, placing sixth overall. Muratore followed as he tied for 28th with his 220 (75-73-72). Freshman RJ Arone (74-75-77) and senior Yuqi Liu (75-78-73) each tied for 46th (226), while fifth-year senior Ben Hoagland recovered from a slow middle round, using his closing 71 (-1) to tie for 61st (230).
Fellow fifth-year senior Jack O'Donnell paced U-M's four individuals, finishing 56th at 227 (75-77-75).
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor and will not compete for nearly a month as they prepare for Indiana's Hoosier Collegiate Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (April 5-6). The two-day, 54-hole event will be played on the Pfau Course at Indiana.
