GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Michigan softball team powered its way to a pair of victories with nine total home runs, defeating North Carolina Central, 8-0 in five innings, and UNC Greensboro, 9-2. Freshman right-handed pitcher Kat Meyers made history in the first game, throwing the ninth perfect game in program history to help the Wolverines wrap up their annual spring break trip on Saturday (March 8) at UNCG Softball Stadium.
Meyers (1-0) retired 15 straight batters against NC Central in her first collegiate start. She posted six strikeouts over five innings, including two apiece in the second, third, and fifth innings, with back-to-back swinging strikeouts to close out the game. It was the ninth perfect game in program history and the first since Sarah Schaefer in 2018.
The Wolverines (18-7) posted six homers against NC Central game (1-18) and three more against UNC Greensboro (16-7), scoring all but one of their 17 runs on the long ball. Sophomore right fielder Ella Stephenson posted three homers, including two against NCCU, and seven RBI on the day, while freshman designated player Lauren Putz and junior first baseman Madi Ramey registered two-homer games in the first and second games, respectively; Ramey boasted five RBI against the Spartans.
Michigan built its lead gradually against NC Central, scoring runs in four innings, including three-spots in the third and fifth frames. The Wolverines belted five solo homers before Stephenson broke it open with a three-run blast to center field in the third. She added a leadoff solo shot in the fifth, and after a flyout, Putz and sophomore pinch hitter Reganne Bennett went yard in back-to-back at-bats. It was Bennett's first hit as a Wolverine.
Sophomore center fielder Jenissa Conway, who homered in the first inning against NCCU, also tallied the Wolverines' first run in the first frame against UNCG, driving a one-out single through the right side, swiping second, and scoring on junior/sophomore Lilly Vallimont's roped single up the middle. Vallimont went 3-for-3 against the Spartans.
Michigan did not score again until the fifth inning but put up crooked numbers in each of the last three frames. Stephenson belted a two-out, three-run blast to left field to give the Wolverines some breathing room, while Ramey posted home runs in back-to-back plate appearances—for two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
After the two-game slugfest, Putz leads the Wolverines with seven homers on the season, while Stephenson boasts six and Conway has five.
The Spartans spoiled the shutout bid with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on an error and three singles. Sophomore RHP Erin Hoehn (10-2) threw five shutout innings, striking out seven while allowing three hits and a walk. Freshman RHP Haley Ferguson added two more strikeouts over the final two frames.
The Wolverines went 10-2 over their 10-day spring break trip.
Michigan will travel to Columbia, Mo., next weekend for its final tournament appearance before the start of Big Ten Conference play. U-M will face Princeton at 12:30 p.m. CT and host Missouri at 5 p.m. CT on Friday (March 14), and South Dakota State at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday (March 15) at the Tigers' Mizzou Softball Stadium.
