IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Behind the doubles point and three straight-set singles victories, the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team rolled to its second straight conference shutout in a 4-0 victory over Iowa on Sunday (March 9) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
The Wolverines won the doubles point for the second straight match, picking up victories at No. 1 and No. 3 to put the first point on the board. Michigan's No. 1 pair of Piper Charney and Jessica Bernales raced out to a 2-0 lead but Iowa answered with two straight to tie the match at 2-2. The teams stayed on serve over the next several games until Michigan broke at 4-3. After consolidating the break in the ensuing game, Michigan broke the Hawkeyes in the final game for a 6-3 win.
U-M's No. 3 duo of Ava Bruno and Lily Jones clinched the doubles point for the Wolverines, taking advantage of a timely break en route to the win. After falling behind a break at 2-1, the Wolverines immediately got it back to pull the match back on serve. Much like their teammates at No. 1, Jones and Bruno broke in the latter stages of the match at 5-3. That was all the space the Wolverines needed as Jones closed out the match on her serve in the next game.
In singles action, U-M took five first sets from the Hawkeyes.
Reese Miller recorded her first Big Ten singles win of the season, knocking off Nikita Vishwase at No. 6 to push the Michigan lead to 2-0.
It was a sprint to the finish from there as Julia Fliegner, Charney and Jones were each one game away from winning their respective matches.
Charney was the first to finish, dropping just five total games in a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 2 position. Jones immediately followed seconds later with an equally dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 for Michigan's fourth point of the afternoon.
The win marked Michigan's 30th straight Big Ten regular-season win.
Michigan returns home for a pair of matches next weekend, first hosting Ohio State on Saturday (March 15) at noon.
