EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell 15-6 to No. 3 Northwestern on Thursday night (April 17) in a Big Ten road contest at Martin Stadium.
Senior Jill Smith extended her point streak to 32 consecutive games to tie the Michigan record; she has scored at least one goal in each game over the streak. Smith netted one for the Wolverines (10-5, 4-3 Big Ten) against Northwestern (13-2, 7-0 Big Ten), while Kaylee Dyer had a team-best three points with two goals and one assist.
Senior goalie Erin O'Grady made 12 saves, while Grace Callahan had two caused turnovers and one ground ball on defense.
O'Grady made a quick save in the first two minutes of play to set the tone for the first half as Julia Schwabe scored to put U-M up 1-0 just three minutes into the game. The defense continued to cause problems for the Northwestern offense as Callahan forced a back-check, and O'Grady made a point-blank save with five minutes left in the opening stanza.
Smith put Michigan up 2-0 on a man-down free-position opportunity before Schwabe found Jane Fetterolf on the cut and score to extend the Wolverine lead to 3-0 with one minute to play. Northwestern netted its first goal in the final minute of the quarter.
The Wildcats scored six straight to open the second quarter and take a 7-3 lead over Michigan. Dyer scored on an open-net free position in the final five seconds of the quarter as U-M went into the halftime break trailing by three, 7-4.
O'Grady made 10 saves in the first half, while Dyer and Schwabe had two points each with one goal and one assist.
It was all Northwestern in the third quarter, adding six more goals to take the 13-4 advantage into the final quarter.
The Wildcats scored two goals to start the fourth quarter before Peyton Shreves and Dyer added one goal each from the free position. However, the Wolverines were unable to overcome the deficit.
