
Michigan Finishes Regular Season with Victory over Rutgers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13 University of Michigan women's lacrosse team concluded its 2025 regular season with a 12-9 Big Ten win over Rutgers on Saturday (April 19) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (11-5, 5-3 B1G) won the draw control battle 15-10 as Jill Smith won seven and Emma Burke won five. Offensively, Smith scored in her 33rd consecutive game with two goals on the day to break the Michigan record previously held by Caitlin Muir. Sophomore Emma Bradbury and senior Jane Fetterolf both notched hat tricks, while Calli Norris and Smith added two goals each.
Defensively, Maya Rutherford had two caused turnovers and one ground ball, and Kaylee Dyer collected three ground balls and an assist for the Maize and Blue. Senior goalkeeper Erin O'Grady made nine saves to earn the win in cage.
Rutgers (8-9, 2-6 B1G) opened the scoring before Bradbury netted back-to-back goals within a minute to give Michigan a 2-1 lead. Fetterolf added a goal in the closing minute of the first quarter, giving U-M a 3-1 advantage heading into the second.
Bradbury completed her hat trick early in the second quarter, but Rutgers responded with three straight goals to even the score at 4-4 with 2:34 left in the half. Smith restored the lead, bouncing in a shot to give the Wolverines a 5-4 halftime edge.
O'Grady made six first-half saves, and Michigan held a 6-5 edge in draw controls at the break.
U-M came out strong in the third quarter, scoring four straight goals to push its lead to 9-4 with 5:48 left in the period. Rutgers answered with a four-goal run to pull within one at 9-8 with 23 seconds remaining. However, Smith won the ensuing draw and sprinted downfield to score with 14 seconds left, restoring a two-goal cushion heading into the fourth.
The Wolverines clamped down defensively in the final quarter, allowing just one goal while adding two more scores to secure the 12-9 home win.
Michigan will await seeding for the Big Ten Conference Tournament, which begins Wednesday (April 23) on the campus of the University of Maryland.
