
Sydney Sung Among Top Five, Wolverines 10th after First Day of Big Tens

» Led by Sydney Sung's opening 71 (-1), Michigan posted a 298 first-round team total at Bulle Rock Golf Course and positioned itself 10th after day one of the Big Ten Championships.
» Starting off the 10th tee, Sung used three birdies (Nos. 14, 18 and 1) and parred 13 to record a 71 (-1) -- her second sub-par tally of the season and career-low at the conference championships -- to tie for fifth.
» With three birdies of her own, Mara Janess opened with a 74 (+2) and is tied for 28th, while Grace Wang's 76 has her tied for 47th.

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. -- Using junior Sydney Sung's first-round 71 (-1), the University of Michigan women's golf team opened its Big Ten Championships with a 298 team total on Friday (April 18) and positioned itself 10th after 18 holes at the Bulle Rock Golf Course.
With 13 pars and three birdies (Nos. 1, 14, 18), Sung paced the Maize and Blue with her second sub-par tally of the season and career-low at the conference championships as she is tied for fifth. Sung is two shots back of first-day leader Ting-Hsuan Huang of Oregon, who opened with the lone sub-70 tally of the round (69, -3).
After starting three over par in her first nine holes, redshirt-sophomore Mara Janess posed three front-side birdies (Nos. 1, 2, 8) and carded an opening 74 (+2), which has her tied for 28th. In her first Big Ten Championships, sophomore Grace Wang made the turn at three-over but used a pair of birdies on the front-side par 3s (Nos. 3 and 7) to close one-over and post a 76 (+4), putting her in a tie for 47th.
Rounding out U-M's starting five, freshman Thomasine Bartholdson is making her Big Ten debut and is tied for 59th (77), while junior Lauren Sung is tied for 68th (78).
In the second straight year at Bulle Rock and the first championships with the four expansion West Coast teams, Oregon and Illinois hold the first-day lead after 286 (-2) team totals. Ohio State is third (288, E) with Michigan State fourth (292).
The Wolverines, who will be paired with Purdue (300) and Maryland (302), return for the second round on Saturday morning (April 19) off the 10th tee for a second straight day at 10:10 a.m.
