WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Posting a fifth straight sub-par 54-hole total, senior Hunter Thomson (203, -10) finished his regular-season career by capturing medalist honors at the Purdue Invitational today (Sunday, April 20). With his performance, he helped guide the University of Michigan men's golf team to a seventh-place finish with an 844 (-8) team total at the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
The reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Week was masterful in his regular-season finale. After carding three bogeys and two birdies in his first 12 holes, he closed the opening round with two additional birdies to post a 70 (-1). Including his final six holes from round one, Thomson strung together back-to-back clean-sheet rounds and played 42 consecutive holes of bogey-free golf to earn his third career title.
Following his 70 (-1) opener, Thomson recorded rounds of 66 (-5) and 67 (-4) with nine birdies and 27 pars. His 203 (-10) total marked his second individual title of the season and sixth top-five finish. This spring, Thomson has carded 14 of 15 rounds at par or better, including 11 sub-par scores.
Fellow senior Yuqi Liu tied for 13th (211, -2) in his regular-season finale to help the Wolverines tally their 844 (-8) total and secure seventh place in the Boilermakers' spring event. Freshmen RJ Arone (215) and Dean Muratore (218) added top-50 finishes, tying for 37th and 47th, respectively.
In Purdue's individual tournament at the Kampen Course, fifth-year senior Jack O'Donnell paced three Michigan participants with a tie for 10th (226), while freshman Johnny Solis tied for 18th (229).
With the regular season now complete, the Wolverines shift their focus to the postseason. First up is the Big Ten Championships, Friday through Sunday (April 25-27). The three-day, 54-hole event returns to Baltimore Country Club for the third time -- and first since 2017 and 2018 -- marking the 14th straight year the championships will be held at a neutral site.
