
Thomson Shoots Even Par, Wolverines 14th after Day One of Big Ten Championships

» With a 288 opening team tally, Michigan positioned itself in a tie for 14th, along with USC, after the first round of the Big Ten Championships at the Baltimore Country Club's Five Farms East.
» Etching 16 pars, a birdie (No. 1) and a bogey (No. 7), Hunter Thomson paced U-M with an even-par 70 and tied him for 22nd. With 13 pars and two birdies (Nos. 5, 17) of his own, Yuqi Liu carded a 71 (+1) and is tied for 29th.
» Dean Muratore (72, t-41st) and RJ Arone (78, t-85th) are making their postseason debut.
» The new 18-member Big Ten field played the conference tournament for the 14th straight year at a neutral-site course.

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Led by seniors Hunter Thomson and Yuqi Liu, the University of Michigan men's golf team opened its Big Ten Championships with a 288-team total today (Friday, April 25) and positioned the Wolverines tied for 14th with USC at the Baltimore Country Club's Five Farms East Course.

Returning to Baltimore for the first time since 2018, Thomson paced the Wolverines with an opening even-par tally of 70. Etching a birdie on his opening hole, he drew even after a bogey on the seventh. Parring his next 11 holes, and 16 total, he carded his 70 and positioned himself in a tie for 22nd.

Following right behind Thomson was classmate Liu. In his fourth straight start at the conference tournament, Liu posted 13 pars and birdies on Nos. 5 and 17 to open with a 71 (+1), putting him in a tie for 29th. In his Big Ten debut, freshman Dean Muratore was three-over after seven holes before birdies on Nos. 9 and 12, which helped him head to the 13th one-over. Despite a bogey on No. 14, he closed with a 72 (+2) and was tied for 41st.Â

With three Illini golfers shooting under par, including day one leader Max Herendeen (63, -7), Illinois used a first-round 270 (-10) to hold a seven-shot lead over Indiana (277, -3) and UCLA (278, -2).

The Maize and Blue will be paired with Nebraska (287) and USC (288) for Saturday's (April 26) second round. The grouping tees off the 10th tee starting at 9:50 a.m.
