ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Seniors Gavin Young and Will Cooksey of the University of Michigan men's tennis earned second-team All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced Thursday (April 24).
This is Young's fourth all-conference honor earning second-team accolades in 2022 and 2023, and first-team honors last season. The 2024 NCAA national runner-up in doubles, earned his second All-America honor this fall. Young posted a 16-4 record in doubles play this year and went 6-1 against nationally ranked opponents, including knocking off the No. 2-ranked pair from Georgia in September. In singles, Young posted a 12-7 record with half of his 12 wins being against ranked opponents. He has consistently been ranked in both singles and doubles all season, with limited playing time this spring due to injuries.
Cooksey earned his first All-Big Ten honor while leading the Wolverines in singles wins, with 21 heading into the Big Ten Tournament. With a 21-9 singles mark, he has gone 13-6 in dual play and posted a 7-3 mark against conference opponents. During the season, he matched a career-best six-match win streak for the third time in his career and had two wins over top-25 opponents -- including No. 11 Aidan Kim and No. 12 Ozan Baris. On Tuesday, he earned his highest ITA ranking to date, checking in at No. 60. In doubles action, Cookey notched a career-best seven-match win streak from November through January and posted a 17-14 mark.
Sophomore Alex Cairo was honored as Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. Cairo went 10-12 in singles play and 14-12 in doubles.
Michigan is the No. 7 seed in this weekend's Big Ten Tournament being played in Columbus, Ohio, on the campus of Ohio State. The Wolverines will take on Northwestern in the first round today (April 23) at 2 p.m.
