ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team dropped its first Big Ten contest of the season on Sunday (April 6), falling to No. 10 Penn State, 11-8, at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (6-5, 2-1 Big Ten) received three points apiece from Ryan Cohen and Lukas Stanat, but Penn State (7-3, 1-2 Big Ten) closed the game with a 5-1 fourth-quarter run to earn its first conference win of the season.
The Nittany Lions opened the game by scoring three of the first four goals. Michigan responded with a 3-1 advantage in the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. Senior Mason Whitney caused three turnovers in the opening half, while U-M recorded 10 shots on goal to Penn State's seven.
Penn State pulled even twice in the third quarter, but goals from Stanat and Cohen helped Michigan maintain a 7-6 edge entering the final frame.
The Nittany Lions controlled possession in the fourth, winning four consecutive faceoffs during a stretch in which they scored five straight goals to take an 11-7 lead with less than two minutes remaining. Emmett Houlihan scored his fourth goal in as many games to cut into the deficit with 1:04 left, but Michigan was unable to draw closer.
The Wolverines will close their Big Ten road schedule on Sunday (April 13), traveling to Piscataway, N.J., for a noon matchup against Rutgers.
