URBANA, Ill. -- Using five birdies to pace a 67 (-4) in today's (Tuesday, May 13) second round, senior Hunter Thomson of the University of Michigan men's golf team is a shot back of the individual lead with his 136 (-6) total at the NCAA Urbana Regional being played at the Atkins Golf Club.
Thomson's regional play has positioned him for potential advancement to the NCAA Finals. The top individual spot among the five non-qualifying teams will move him to the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa championships in Carlsbad, Calif. With one round to go, Thomson leads Cincinnati's Ryan Ford (69-68/137, -5) by a single shot. Both will be paired for Wednesday's (May 14) final round at 10:34 a.m. CT.
Playing in the final pairing for a second straight day, Thomson opened his second round with five pars before birdieing two of his next three (Nos. 5 & 8) to reach the turn at two-under. Heading to the back-nine, he added two more birdies (Nos. 13 & 15) to go four-under with three holes left.
As rain clouds rolled into the area, Thomson posted his first blemish with his bogey on the 16th. Heading to the next tee box, the horn sounded, and the field was called off the course due to lightning in the area. Following a two-hour delay, Thomson returned to the course, paring the 17th and closing with a birdie on the 18th to help him tie the day's lowest round.
Host Illinois holds a three-shot regional lead with its 558 (-10; 277-281) total. Oklahoma State used a second-round best 275 (-9) to move into second at 561 (286-275) along with UNLV (281-280). The top five rounds out with Texas Tech (566) and Troy (567).
With a second-round 67 (-4), UNLV's Caden Fioroni moved into the individual top spot, while first-day leader Jackson Buchanan (63-73/136, -5) is tied for second with Ford. Thomson is tied for fourth with four others.
