ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the second straight year, University of Michigan men's golf team senior Hunter Thomson earned an individual invitation to an NCAA regional and heads to Urbana, Ill., Monday through Wednesday (May 12-14). Ten individuals and a 12-team field will play the three-day, 54-hole event at the Atkins Golf Club. The course is scheduled to be set up for a par 71 at 7,533 yards.
Notes
• Thomson begins his quest to advance to the 2025 NCAA Finals with his practice round on Sunday, May 11. He will vie for the top individual spot among non-qualifying teams to advance to the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa championships in Carlsbad, Calif. The invited individuals will tee off from the No. 1 tee for all three rounds starting at 9:50 a.m. CT.
• Thomson is among 10 total individuals invited to the Urbana Regional, including Jack Schoenberger (Kentucky), Paul Beauvy (Iowa State), Patton Samuels (Austin Peay), Anthony Delisanti (Valparaiso), Clay Merchent (Indiana), Ryan Ford (Cincinnati), Ben Cors (Dayton), Titus Boswell (IU Indy) and Trey Wall (Murray State). The 12 teams (by seed) are Oklahoma State, North Carolina, Illinois, Texas Tech, Long Beach State, UNLV, Houston, Marquette, Troy, Pacific, NC State, Illinois State and Wright State.
• In last year's regional, Thomson posted a 218 (+2; 73-71-74) total and tied for 27th at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, Kampen Course. The trip was his first NCAA postseason event, and he was the first Wolverine in six years to earn an invitation to an NCAA regional.
• For a second straight season, Thomson was named a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team. He became the fifth Wolverine to earn first-team conference honors more than once, joining U-M greats Dan Roberts (1983, '85), Kyle Dobbs (1995, '97), Michael Harris (1998, '99, 2000) and Kyle Mueller (2016, '17, '18). Thomson is the 22nd Wolverine to garner All-Big Ten honors and helped the U-M program earn its 25th first-team citation.
• Thomson led the Wolverines in 11 of 12 events, including the final seven tournaments. Winning the Canadian Collegiate Invitational (202, -14) and the Boilermaker Invitational (203, -10), he recorded nine top-10 finishes, with six in the top five. In his career, he has finished as the top Wolverine in 33 of 48 tournaments.
• With a career-low 70.09 scoring average, Thomson is on pace to break his U-M single-season record (70.56 in 2023-24). He earned 20 sub-par rounds and shot a season-low 66 three times -- in the first and second rounds of the Canadian Collegiate and the second round of the Boilermaker. Overall, he posted 13 sub-70 rounds.
• Averaging 210.36 per 54-hole event, Thomson has seven sub-par tallies, including all five spring events. He posted a season-best 202 (-14) at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 16-17). This season, he tallied the top four scores and five of the top six 54-hole totals.
