
Three Advance to 1,500m Finals, U-M 10th After Day One of B1G Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team opened the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday (May 16) at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., scoring three points to end day one in 10th place and sending three members through to the finals in the 1,500-meter run.
Eli Winter earned three points for the Wolverines with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 66.64 meters (218 feet, 8 inches). The mark was just 0.28m shy of his personal best.
The trio of Brendan Herger (3:43.14), Trent McFarland (3:45.79) and Riley Flemington (3:48.31) will take part in the finals of the 1,500 meters on Sunday. McFarland and Flemington automatically qualified after finishing in the top two in their heats, while Herger qualified on time.
Neil Howard made his Big Ten Championships debut, placing 19th in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 54.27 seconds. Jacob Koerner finished 29th in the 200-meter dash preliminaries (21.79).
In the 10,000-meter run, Luke Venhuizen finished 16th with a time of 29:56.03 and Owen MacKenzie finished 19th with a time of 30:28.98.
The Wolverines had another set of 16th and 19th-place finishers, this time in the pole vault, with Liam Kinney and Cole Sheldon both clearing 4.94m (16-2.25).
U-M will continue competition at Hayward Field on Saturday (May 17) on day two of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, opening the day with the long jump at 12:30 p.m. PT.
