
Sutherland Three-Peat, Program Records Highlight U-M's Ninth-Place B1G Finish

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., on Sunday (May 18), with Savannah Sutherland winning the 400-meter hurdles title and U-M setting a pair of program records on the way to a ninth-place finish.
The Maize and Blue compiled 46 team points in the ninth-place finish. USC (121), Oregon (113) and UCLA (84) rounded out the top three.
Sutherland earned her third straight 400-meter hurdles title with a time of 55.37, just 0.36 shy of the meet record she set last year. The senior is the seventh Wolverine to win three-straight titles and the first to do so in the 400-meter hurdles. Sidney Green finished in second place with a time of 57.47, improving on her eighth-place finish from last year and combining with Sutherland for 18 points.
Emma Yungeberg earned a fourth-place finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 53.08m (174-2) to top the program record she set at the 2024 NCAA Championships. The junior had a solid first attempt, throwing for a season-best mark of 51.38m (168-7). Her final throw was her furthest of the day, besting the previous record by 0.72m.
Elizabeth Tapper was the second Wolverine to break a program record, finishing second in the shot put with a personal best mark of 17.65m (57-11). The sophomore previously set the standard of 17.27m (56-8) at the Duke Twilight on May 4.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Payton Smith, Sutherland, Green and Trinity Henderson won bronze with a time of 3:32.47, with the time coming in at No. 4 on the program performers list, to earn six points for the Maize and Blue.
Stephanie Bertram finished eighth in the 800-meter run (2:06.72) while Gabriella Newman finished seventh in the high jump with a personal best mark of 1.75m (5-8.75). The pair combined for three points.
Michigan will continue postseason competition with the NCAA East First Round in Jacksonville, Fla., at North Florida on May 28-31. Selections will be announced on Thursday (May 22) by the NCAA.
