MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan softball team sacrificed an early lead and could not get its bats going in a 4-0 loss in its series opener at Minnesota on Friday evening (May 2) at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
Senior left fielder Ellie Sieler recorded all three of the Wolverines' hits, including a seventh-inning double, while Michigan (32-19, 9-11 Big Ten) stranded five on base in the game. It was just the second shutout allowed by the Wolverines all season.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Erin Hoehn (16-6) took the loss from the circle, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Minnesota (20-28, 5-15 Big Ten) knocked out a two-run homer to right-center in the first inning and added another on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the second to build an early lead.
Michigan struggled offensively after stranding sophomore center fielder Jenissa Conway on second in the first inning. The Wolverines threatened in the fourth, reaching on a walk with two outs and a Sieler bunt single on the next pitch, but a groundout back to the circle stranded both Wolverines.
Hoehn settled in during the middle innings, at one point retiring six straight before the Gophers struck again with a two-out unearned run in the fifth. Minnesota took advantage of a Michigan fielding error at first base to extend the inning and scored in the next at-bat when a low liner got past Sieler in left field.
Sieler laced a one-out double off the center-field wall in the seventh and advanced to third on a groundout but was stranded by a strikeout to end the game.
Michigan will resume its weekend series Saturday (May 3) with a 1 p.m. CT game at Minnesota at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. It will be streamed live on B1G+.
