CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Senior Hunter Thomson of the University of Michigan men's golf team opened his NCAA Championships Final with a 79 (+7) on Friday (May 23) and positioned himself in a tie for 141st among the 156-golfer field.
Playing in the afternoon wave, Thomson began his first trip to the NCAA Finals using a birdie on the par-5 second hole to quickly move under par. However, his first double-bogey since the second round of the Big Ten Championships on the par-3 third and a bogey on the fourth pushed him to two-over.
It would not last long, as Thomson rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6 and 7, drawing him even with two holes left on the front side. However, he found trouble as he posted three straight bogeys and made the turn to head to the 11th hole at three-over.
Unable to find a solid rhythm throughout the first round, he added four more bogeys in his first seven holes as he closed with a 79 (+7). The round was Thomson's highest total since his sophomore season when he posted an 80 in the first round of the Fighting Illini Collegiate (April 22-23, 2023).
The top 15 teams and the top nine individuals among non-qualifying teams advance to Monday's (May 26) final round. From there, the individual national champion will be crowned, and the top eight teams will qualify for team match play for the national title.
Thomson will kick off the second day of the NCAA Championships Finals on Saturday (May 24) at 8:42 a.m. PT at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
