
Thomson Readies for Test at NCAA Finals in California

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After winning the NCAA Urbana Regional, Hunter Thomson, a senior University of Michigan men's golf team member, advanced to the NCAA Finals in Carlsbad, Calif., and will compete for an individual national title, Friday through Monday (May 23-26) at the to the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. In addition to the 30 advanced teams, Thomson is one of six regional individuals to earn a spot in the national championship. The course is scheduled to be set up for a par 72 at 7,538 yards.

• Six individuals advanced to the NCAA Finals, including (by finals seeding) No. 1 seed Jacob Modleski (Notre Dame), No. 2 seed Thomson, No. 3 seed Bryan Kim (Duke), No. 4 seed Claes Borregaard (Kennesaw State), No. 5 seed Braxton Watts (Utah) and No. 6 seed Sakke Siltala (Texas State). Modleski, Thomson and Kim will play the first two rounds together.

• With a 54-hole regional total of 203 (-10) at the Atkins Golf Club, Thomson won the 2025 NCAA Urbana Regional and earned the advancing individual spot for the NCAA Finals. Thomson won U-M's third regional, joining former All-Americans Lion Kim (2011 Central Regional; 205, -8) and Kyle Mueller (2018 Columbus Regional; 208, -5) on the Maize and Blue's exclusive list. Overall, Thomson becomes the 13th Wolverine individual to make the trip to the NCAA Finals and the first since Mueller's trip in 2018.
• In his 2024 regional appearance, Thomson posted a 218 (+2; 73-71-74) total and tied for 27th at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, Kampen Course. The trip was his first NCAA postseason event, and he was the first Wolverine in six years to earn an invitation to an NCAA regional.
• For a second straight season, Thomson was named a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team. He became the fifth Wolverine to earn first-team conference honors more than once, joining U-M greats Dan Roberts (1983, '85), Kyle Dobbs (1995, '97), Michael Harris (1998, '99, 2000) and Kyle Mueller (2016, '17, '18). Thomson is the 22nd Wolverine to garner All-Big Ten honors and helped the U-M program earn its 25th first-team citation.
• Thomson has led the Wolverines in 12 of 13 events, including the final eight tournaments. Winning the Canadian Collegiate Invitational (202, -14), the Boilermaker Invitational (203, -10) and the NCAA Urbana Regional (203, -10), he recorded 10 top-10 finishes, with seven in the top five. For his career, he has finished as the top Wolverine in 34 of 49 tournaments.
• Averaging a U-M record and first sub-70 average (69.89), Thomson posted three straight regional rounds under par to help him set a career season-best with 23 sub-par tallies in 38 rounds. With his 203 (-10) 54-hole regional total, he has nine of 13 events under par and 23 total in his career.
• Averaging 209.75 per 54-hole event, Thomson has eight sub-par tallies, including all five spring events. He posted a season-best 202 (-14) at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 16-17). This season, he tallied the top five and six of the top seven 54-hole totals. Overall, he has 24 career sub-par 54-hole totals.
