WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program earned an 11th-place overall finish on day three of the NCAA Championships on Sunday (June 1). En route to the team finish, the Wolverines saw all three of their boats place within the top 12 overall (1V8, 12th; 2V8, 9th; 1V4, 10th).
Sunday's racing conditions were a cool 55 degrees and sunny with a 10 mile per hour crosswind — fair weather for early morning finals. All three of Michigan's boats raced in petite finals with the opportunity to place between seventh and 12th overall for the weekend.
In the 1V4 petite, the race opened to a close start between all six competing boats. California started pulling ahead of the field in the second 500 meters, followed by Syracuse. U-M then entered a race for third place with Harvard and Brown. After the Bears surged ahead in the third 500, a late push by Harvard led to a bow-for-bow final with the Wolverines. In a photo finish, Michigan managed to hold on to fourth place (+0.02) and a 10th overall boat finish for the weekend.
The 2V8 race saw another close start, with Michigan, Brown, Harvard, Syracuse, and Cal all even behind Tennessee through the race's first 500 meters. U-M, rowing strongly in lane two, entered a race for second place with Brown two lanes away. Neither boat allowed the other to gain any seats, while both moved up on the first-place Volunteers heading into the final sprint. In another photo finish, U-M came up just two-tenths of a second short of the Bears for third place and ninth overall.
In the first eight, the final U-M race of the season, a close race ensued for second place as Princeton pulled away from the field. Closest to shore in lane six, the Wolverines worked to keep pace with Indiana for third place as the teams entered the final 1,000 meters following a strong second 500Â by Rutgers. Being several lanes away from the lead boats, Michigan lost its pace in the second half of the race and fell behind the field. The Wolverines' sixth-place finish earned the first eight a 12th-place overall boat finish.
Today's races wrap up the 2024-25 season for Michigan Rowing with an 11th overall NCAA finish, the second-best of Big Ten schools.
