
Richard Places Second at USA Gymnastics Championships, Xiao Named Men’s Senior Coach of the Year

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics program was well represented at the 2025 USA Gymnastics Championships at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, La., Aug. 7-9, with three medals and Coach of the Year honors received.
Senior Fred Richard and alum Crew Bold led the effort, with Bold taking second on the high bar, and Richard finishing second in the all-around and third on the high bar. U-M head coach Yuan Xiao was named the USA Gymnastics 2025 Men's Senior Coach of the Year following the Wolverines' performance at the championships and the collegiate season. Richard was named the USA Gymnastics Men's Sportsperson of the Year.
Both Bold and Richard earned a spot on the 2025 Men's Senior National Team.
Richard was slow to start on day one, sitting in tenth after the first rotation with a score of 13.752 on the floor exercise. The Stoughton, Mass., native moved into fourth place after all six rotations with an all-around score of 79.852 -- with a 14.050 on vault and 13.450 on the high bar helping him move up in the standings. Asher Hong of Stanford (85.585), Fuzzy Benas of Oklahoma (81.105) and Colt Walker of Stanford (81.058) took the top three spots after the first session.
Bold had the second-best high bar score of the night, posting a 14.452 to sit just 0.053 points behind event leader Taylor Burkhart of Stanford. Charlie Larson sat in sixth on the floor exercise after the first session with a 14.150, while Aaronson Mansberger was seventh (13.502) on the pommel horse and Carson Eshleman was eighth on still rings (13.350).
Richard bounced back on day two, scoring the fourth-best floor exercise score (14.002) and second-best high bar score (14.650) for a second session total of 82.703. Richard's final score came in at 162.555, edging third-place finisher Benas (162.310) by 0.245 points. Hong took the all-around crown with a score of 170.020.
Bold posted a total high bar score of 28.254 to earn silver and Richard earned bronze (28.100). Bold also made the podium on the parallel bars, finishing sixth (27.450), while Larson came in fourth (28.100) on the floor exercise and missed a top-three finish by 0.763 points.
Mansberger finished eighth on the pommel horse (27.152). Eshleman finished 16th on still rings (25.450), 21st on the parallel bars (25.400) and 13th on the high bar (26.450).
Incoming freshman Joseph Hale competed, placing 29th in the all-around.
