BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of Michigan men's soccer team came from behind to knock off top-ranked Indiana 3-2 on Saturday night (Sept. 13) at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The win marks the first over the No. 1-ranked team in program history.
On offense, Joao Paulo Ramos, Kyle Pierson and Grayson Elmquist all found the back of the net. The goals mark the first of the season for Elmquist and Ramos and the second in as many matches for Pierson. On defense, Isaiah Goldson tallied three saves, including a save of a penalty in the 90th minute.
Michigan (4-0-2, 1-0-0 Big Ten) built momentum early with four shots and five corners through the first 18 minutes of the contest, but it was the Hoosiers who struck first. Alex Barger found the back of the net for Indiana to put the hosts up 1-0 in the 19th minute of play.
Michigan equalized with its third penalty goal of the season in the 44th minute. After a handball was called on Indiana, Ramos stepped to the spot and converted the chance to bring the game level at one heading into halftime.
The second half was even between both sides until the 71st minute, when Ramos crossed the ball into the penalty box and onto the head of Pierson, who guided the ball past the keeper to put Michigan in front, 2-1.
Elmquist doubled the Wolverines' advantage in the 81st minute when he powered a shot into the bottom corner of the net off a deed from Dylan Davis to propel U-M to a 3-1 lead.
After Indiana (5-1-1, 0-1-0 Big Ten) pulled one back in the 83rd minute to make it 3-2, the Hoosiers were awarded a penalty in the final minute with a chance to equalize. Goldson came up huge by deflecting the shot off the post and away from the goal to preserve the lead and give Michigan a signature win.
Next up, U-M will travel to Seattle to take on Washington next Saturday (Sept. 20) at 7 p.m. PT, and the match will be streamed live on B1G+.
