ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Eastern Michigan (25-12, 25-19, 25-20) on Tuesday night (Sept. 2) at Crisler Center in its home opener.
Michigan (3-0) was led by Allison Jacobs, who posted a match-high 15 kills on 28 swings. Jenna Hanes added eight kills with one error on 15 swings, plus a dig and a block. Lydia Johnson paced the Wolverines at the net with one solo block and two block assists to go with seven kills. Both setters recorded double-digit assists, with Morgan Burke handing out 18 and Ellie White 14. White also notched three aces, the first of her career.
The Wolverines controlled play throughout. Michigan led wire to wire in the first set while siding out at 92% and hitting .548. The Wolverines did not trail in the second set either, hitting .310 with a 68% sideout clip. The third set was tighter, featuring six ties and three lead changes, but Michigan still hit .300 and sided out at 52%.
U-M led the first set from start to finish, opening on a 12-4 run sparked by three kills from Hanes and the first two aces of White's career. After an EMU timeout, the Wolverines extended control with kills from Hanes and Jacobs. Eastern answered with two points, but U-M responded with three more kills to force a second EMU timeout. The teams traded points down the stretch before a kill from Sydney Schnichels closed the set at 25-12.
The second set began similarly, with U-M starting on a 3-0 run that included an ace from Burke. EMU chipped away and tied it at 12, but a service error kept the Eagles from taking the lead. A Jacobs kill and a block from Serena Nyambio and Johnson sent the match to the media timeout with U-M up 15-12. Eastern took the next two points, but the Wolverines answered with a 4-0 burst featuring three different hitters recording kills. EMU forced three straight Michigan errors to prompt a U-M timeout. A Schnichels kill gave U-M set point; the Eagles saved the first, but an error delivered the set, 25-19.
The third set started with a 4-0 EMU run. U-M responded with a 6-2 surge to level the score at six, keyed by Johnson with a kill and two blocks. The Eagles kept the lead for a stretch, and although U-M tied it at 8, 9, and 10, the Wolverines could not move ahead. EMU pulled away again to 14-10, but Michigan took six of the next seven points, led by two Hanes kills and three Burke assists, to seize the lead. After an EMU timeout, a Michigan point off an Eastern error pushed the margin. The Eagles tied it at 18, but U-M closed on a 7-2 run, with an ace from Maddi Cuchran and a Jacobs kill securing the final two points for a 25-20 set-three win.
The Wolverines return to action on Friday (Sept. 5) against Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m. as part of the Michigan Invitational, a three-match weekend at Crisler Center. All matches will stream live on B1G+.
