
Lopez Paces Wolverines as U-M Finishes 18th at Gans Creek Classic

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team returned to action at the Gans Creek Classic hosted by Missouri on Friday (Sept. 26) at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course, finishing 18th behind lead runner Nathan Lopez's 38th-place finish.
Iowa State (47), Virginia (107) and Colorado (126) were the top three team finishers.
The Wolverines sat in seventh place through the first kilometer, with Lopez (16th), Trent McFarland (27th) and Caleb Jarema (39th) leading the U-M contingent. At the 2K mark, Lopez dropped to 34th, while Jarema fell slightly to 41st and Nolan Clark moved up 23 spots to 56th.
Lopez remained the lead Wolverine at the halfway point, sitting in 38th place before moving up to 26th heading into the final kilometer. The senior was the first Michigan runner to cross the finish line, coming in 38th with a personal-best time of 23:14.9.
Luke Venhuizen was the second Wolverine to finish, placing 78th (23:36.4), while McFarland finished 91st (23:44.1).
In the black race, Aiden Sullivan led the Wolverines with a 33rd-place finish (24:15.6) while Kyler McNatt finished 38th (24:20.2).
Michigan will return to action on Oct. 3 at the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
