NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team bounced back with a decisive 4-1 win in its final non-conference game of the season against Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 28) at LR Hill Sports Complex.
The Wolverines scored three times in the first half and earned goals from four different players. Sophomore Eva Bernardy tallied the first and game-winning goal on U-M's opening penalty corner at 4:28, drilling a direct shot from the top of the arc. The ball glanced off the ODU goalkeeper and into the right corner of the cage. Juniors Juliette Manzur and Abby Burnett were credited with the insert and stop assists, respectively. It was Bernardy's third goal of the season.
Michigan added a pair of tip goals in the second quarter. Sophomore Dru Moffett scored her fourth of the season at the 18:53 mark. U-M sent a bouncer into the circle, and while the ODU goalkeeper swatted it away from Moffett, junior/sophomore Kelsey Reviello corralled the ball on the left side and delivered a reverse pass to the center, where Moffett was waiting to redirect it.
Junior Payton Maloney followed less than five minutes later at 23:26 with a tip of her own. The Wolverines crashed the ODU cage with numbers as freshman Manouk Saal carried the ball into the circle and sent one through the middle. Senior/junior Zoë Bormet ran it down and fired a shot from the left side, and Maloney tipped it in from the stroke mark for her third goal of the year.
Michigan kept the momentum early in the third quarter. At 32:36, fifth-year senior Emmy Tran collected a ball that ricocheted into the circle and banked it off an ODU defender's stick into the lower left corner for her third goal of the season.
The Monarchs spoiled Michigan's shutout bid with just seven seconds left, scoring at 59:53 after earning a 1-on-1 in the circle and spinning a shot into the lower left corner of the cage.
Shots were even at 10-10, while ODU held a narrow 5-4 advantage in penalty corners. Junior/sophomore Hala Silverstein and graduate student Caylie McMahon split time in goal, each playing a half. Silverstein posted three saves, while McMahon added two. Monarchs goalkeeper Suus Broers stopped three of Michigan's seven shots on goal.
Michigan (6-3) will host a pair of Big Ten Conference foes next weekend, welcoming Penn State at 6 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 3) and Rutgers at noon on Sunday (Oct. 5) at Phyllis Ocker Field. It will be the Wolverines' annual Alumni Weekend, where they will honor newly retired coach Marcia Pankratz as part of the "Marciapalooza" celebration. Admission is free to both contests, and Sunday's game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
