ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team earned a score of 308.400 in its season opener to sweep No. 13 Greenville (305.200) and No. 15 Simpson (292.500) on Saturday (Jan. 10) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan led the entire meet, earning six event titles to secure the season-opening win. Sophomore Solen Chiodi took home three event titles, securing the floor exercise and all-around titles in addition to tying for first on vault. Sophomore Aaronson Mansberger won the pommel horse title (13.350), while junior Akshay Puri won the still rings title (13.400) and freshman Eli Osuna won the high bar title (13.200) before finishing second in the all-around in his collegiate debut. Captain Landen Blixt returned to the lineup after a season-ending injury at last year's Windy City Invite, placing fourth on the pommel horse and tying for third on the high bar.
How it Happened
Rotation 1
Junior Jake Islam was the leadoff on the floor exercise, scoring a 13.150 to finish fourth. Osuna built the momentum for the Wolverines with a score of 13.000 before Chiodi posted an impressive 13.650. Chase Pappas made his collegiate debut, anchoring the rotation with a score of 12.700. Michigan leads 52.500 over Greenville (50.700) and Simpson (45.900).
Rotation 2
Zach Granados opened the rotation with a 13.150 to take home bronze on pommel horse while Blixt scored a 12.850 in his first appearance on the apparatus since 2024. Mansberger closed out the rotation with a 13.350 to allow the Maize and Blue to maintain a solid lead. Michigan (103.500) leads Greenville (101.550) and Simpson (95.350).
Rotation 3
Islam once again opened the rotation for the Wolverines, scoring a 12.600 on the still rings. Senior Robert Noll earned U-M's first stick of the day, posting 13.200 to finish second. Chiodi and Puri followed with a 12.600 and 13.400, respectively, with both also earning the bonus, allowing Michigan pull away with the meet. Michigan extends its lead to 155.300, with Greenville (148.600) second and Simpsons (145.300).
Rotation 4
Noll maintained the energy for Michigan, earning a score of 13.450 on vault. Chiodi saw his best score of the day on vault, posting a 14.150 to tie for first with Greenville's Jaxon Clapper. The pair earned the meet's only score above 14.000. Osuna continued his strong debut performance, notching a 13.950 before Pappas scored a 13.000 as the anchor. Vault was the team's best event of the day, with a total score of 54.550. Michigan widens the gap with a score of 209.850, with Greenville (199.250) and Simpson (191.000) remaining second and third.
Rotation 5
Chiodi continued his impressive showing to open parallel bars, posting a 13.400 and earning his second stick of the meet. Junior Kyle Walchuk finished second to anchor the rotation, earning a 13.500. Michigan holds the lead with a score of 260.750, despite strong rotations from Greenville (253.000) and Simpson (238.000).
Rotation 6
Blixt put up a solid performance of 12.850 for a third-place finish on the high bar. Despite Noll and Chiodi both earning the stick bonus to close out the meet, low scores from the pair allowed Greenville to narrow the scoring gap, but it was unable to overcome the deficit. Osuna earned the event title with a 13.200, but his score did not count towards Michigan's team score. Michigan (308.400) defeats Greenville (305.200) and Simpson (292.500).
