ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The top-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team (20-4, 11-3 Big Ten) will look to stay in first place in the Big Ten when it travels to Ohio State (8-13-1, 4-8 Big Ten) this weekend. The teams will face off on Friday (Jan. 30) at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday (Jan. 31) at 5 p.m., with both games streaming on B1G+ from the Schottenstein Center.
Notes
• Michigan is 20-4 coming off its bye week. The Wolverines are in a first-place tie in the Big Ten standings, along with Penn State, with 31 total points. Ohio State is in sixth place with 12 points, but has two games in hand over the rest of the league.
• The Wolverines remain No. 1 in the national poll for the ninth straight week. This is the longest Michigan has been ranked No. 1 since the 1996-97 season, when Michigan debuted at No. 1 in October and held the spot through the Frozen Four.
• Michigan holds a 100-53-16 advantage in the all-time series with Ohio State, including a sweep at Yost Ice Arena earlier this year. T.J. Hughes paced the offense that weekend with three goals and two assists. All but two skaters had at least one point in that series.
• Hughes sits atop the scoring column with 34 points on 11 goals and a team-best 23 assists. With 156 career points, Hughes sits tied for 32nd all-time at Michigan -- along with Bill MacFarland and Gordon Wilkie.
• Following Hughes, three others are averaging at least 1.00 point per game, including Michael Hage at 1.33, Will Horcoff at 1.25 and Jayden Perron at 1.00.
• While Michigan ranks first in both scoring offense (4.83) and scoring margin (+2.75), the Wolverines are fourth in scoring defense (2.08). Ohio State's scoring offense ranks 33rd (2.91), its defense 53rd (3.50) for a -0.59 scoring margin.
• The Wolverines' second-ranked power play unit (30.8) could get opportunities this weekend against a penalty kill that ranks 49th in the nation (76.5 percent). Horcoff ranks third in the nation in power-play goals with eight.
• Freshman goaltender Stephen Peck was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week in Michigan's last time out, a sweep at Minnesota. Peck is 3-0 on the season with a .910 save percentage and a 2.26 goals against average.
• Next week, Michigan will host Michigan State on Friday (Feb. 6) at Yost Ice Arena, followed by the Duel in the D at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday (Feb. 7).
