IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team split matches evenly and led until the final bout in a heartbreaking 19-17 defeat at No. 7 Iowa on Friday night (Feb. 14) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Wolverines claimed four of the first five bouts, including comeback wins at 157 and 174 pounds, to build an eight-point lead at the intermission break. But Iowa answered with wins in four of the final five, closing out the dual with a technical fall at 133 pounds to take its first lead of the dual.
Redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona, ranked 11th at 174 pounds in the latest InterMat poll, scored two takedowns -- the only ones of the match -- to earn a 6-3 overtime decision against No. 3 Patrick Kennedy. Mantanona trailed by two late after a second-period rideout and an Iowa escape in the third. He finished on a single leg in the final 15 seconds of regulation but was called for stalling moments later to even the score.
Kennedy was close to finishing on a go behind early in sudden victory, but Mantanona scrambled out of it and, with blood smeared across his face, worked to finish the score himself. It was his third top-10 win this season and the highest-ranked win of his collegiate career.
Redshirt freshman Cameron Catrabone, ranked 13th at 157 pounds, also used a late scramble to secure a 5-4 comeback win against 14th-ranked Jordan Williams. The Hawkeye wrestler struck first with a late takedown in the opening frame, but led by just one after starting neutral in the third period. Catrabone shot in on a high crotch midway through, lost position on the mat, regained it, and won the extended scramble for the winning takedown with 35 seconds left. He improved to 6-1 in Big Ten duals.
Catrabone's win was the third in a row to open the dual for Michigan. Graduate student Dylan Ragusin, ranked 26th at 141 pounds, earned bonus with an 11-2 major decision against Kale Peterson in the first bout of the night. Ragusin scored three takedowns -- one per period -- and finished out of a scramble on the edge late to secure the extra point. Graduate student Lachlan McNeil, ranked 15th nationally, followed with an 8-3 decision against 19th-ranked Ryder Block at 149 pounds, scoring the first and last takedowns, including a go behind to ice it in the final 10 seconds of the third.
Michigan dropped tough decisions in back-to-back matches at 184 and 197 pounds. Redshirt freshman Brock Mantanona, ranked seventh, fell 7-2 to Gabe Arnold in the tiebreaker on just 10 seconds of riding-time advantage. Redshirt freshman Hayden Walters, ranked 19th, was doomed by a locked-hands call late in the second period in his 6-4 loss to Harvey Ludington. After an Iowa takedown in the first, Walters reversed Ludington and nearly rode out the remainder of the second but sacrificed a late escape and the penalty. Walters pushed the pace in the third, but could not find a score as Iowa pulled within two points on the scoreboard.
Graduate student heavyweight Taye Ghadiali, ranked fifth nationally, earned his third straight ranked win -- and second top-10 win in those three bouts -- with a 10-0 major decision against eighth-ranked Ben Kueter. Ghadiali scored takedowns in the first and third periods and rode out the second. He tacked on two back points at the final buzzer after going feet-to-back with a bodylock. He improved to 18-2 with 12 bonus wins.
The Hawkeyes claimed the final two bouts, earning an overtime win at 125 pounds, where 27th-ranked graduate student Diego Sotelo narrowly fell 4-1 to sixth-ranked Dean Peterson and the technical fall at 133 pounds. Both teams earned two bonus wins in the dual, with Iowa's two tech falls beating the Wolverines' two major decisions.
The Wolverines (8-5, 4-3 Big Ten) will remain on the road on Sunday (Feb. 15), traveling to Madison to face Wisconsin in their Big Ten dual finale at 1 p.m. CT at the UW Field House.
