ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team earned a dominant win over No. 11 Springfield (302.450) and Arizona State (300.000) with its second-highest season score (318.700) on Saturday (Feb. 14) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (8-2) took control of the meet early, leading by nearly six points after the first rotation. A strong rotation on pommel horse gave U-M an 8.850-point lead before pulling ahead by 14 points with two rotations left. Springfield and Arizona State battled for second, with AZ State taking a 0.550 point lead heading into the final rotation. Despite a 49.900 from the Wolverines on parallel bars, the Maize and Blue was able to seal the win with Springfield finishing second and Arizona State finishing third.
Junior Charlie Larson won the floor exercise with a season high of 14.100 and the vault with a score of 14.200, his first event titles of the season. Sophomores Aaronson Mansberger won the pommel horse (13.850) and Carson Eshleman won the high bar with a career high of 14.200. Freshmen Eli Osuna and Chase Pappas both saw career highs on floor and vault, respectively, while Robert Noll had a season high on high bar and Landen Blixt noted season highs on parallel bars.
How It Happened
Rotation 1
Adam Lakomy opened the floor exercise with a solid 13.400, just 0.200 points shy of his career high. Osuna followed with a career-high performance of 13.500 before Landen Blixt made his season debut on floor with a 13.050. Larson anchored the rotation with a first-place finish and a season-high performance of 14.100 to give Michigan the lead.
The Wolverines (54.050) lead Arizona State (48.500) and Springfield (47.550).
Rotation 2
Zach Granados led off with a 13.400 on pommel horse and Blixt posted a strong 13.800. Mansberger closed it out for the Wolverines with a 13.850 to win the event, with Blixt finishing second and Granados finishing third for a Michigan podium sweep.
U-M extends its lead to 107.550 over Springfield (98.700) and Arizona State (97.650).
Rotation 3
Eshleman and Pierce Wolfgang both made their season debut on rings, posting a 13.100 and 12.150, respectively. Robert Noll scored a 13.300 while Will Young anchored the rotation with a career high of 13.350. Young's score was good for second place and Noll's was third.
The Maize and Blue leads 159.450 to Springfield's 150.850 and Arizona State's 146.950.
Rotation 4
Larson began a dominant vault run for the Wolverines with a 14.200, just 0.100 points from his career high. Lakomy and Pappas both followed with a 14.050, marking a career high for Pappas. Noll contributed a strong 13.750 as the anchor to give U-M a score of 56.050 on the event.
Michigan widened the scoring gap with a 215.500 lead over Springfield (201.000) and Arizona State (194.650).
Rotation 5 Â
Wolfgang opened the parallel bars with a 12.100 and Osuna followed with a career high of 12.850. Blixt contributed a season high of 12.950 while Lakomy made his parallel bars debut with a 12.000. Despite its lowest event score of the day, the Wolverines maintained the lead heading into the final rotation.
U-M remains in first (265.400) while Arizona State (249.200) moves to second over Springfield (248.650).
Rotation 6
Noll led off on high bar with a strong season high of 13.900. Eshleman finished with a career-high performance of 14.200, winning the event, before Blixt closed out the meet with a season-high 13.000. A 12.200 from Osuna wasn't enough for Springfield or Arizona State to take the lead, but a 53.800 from the Pride on vault propelled Springfield back into second.
The Wolverines win the meet 318.700 to Springfield's 302.450 and Arizona State's 300.000.
