ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team held a 46-32 advantage in the second half, erasing a two-point halftime deficit to take an 88-76 win over Nebraska on Wednesday evening (Feb. 4) at Crisler Center.
The win marked Michigan's ninth consecutive Big Ten win, its longest streak in program history. U-M also wrapped up its 20th win of the season, its 17th 20-win season and 13th under head coach Kim Barnes Arico.
Syla Swords went for 28 points and two assists, with Olivia Olson turning in a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Sofilkanich grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds while also scoring nine points, with three blocks, one assist, and one steal. Michigan shot 53.1 percent from the field and held a 40-25 advantage on the glass.
Nebraska used a 12-0 run that spanned halftime to turn a 42-36 Michigan lead into a 48-42 Huskers advantage less than a minute into the half. U-M answered with a Swords layup and after a Nebraska free throw, an Olson layup, a Mila Holloway triple and a layup from Brooke Quarles Daniels pushed the Wolverines ahead 51-49 at the 7:24 mark of the third quarter.
The teams went back and forth over the next several minutes, eventually settling on a 64-64 tie with 41 seconds left in the third. Olson found Kendall Dudley for a layup and after an errant Nebraska shot with 11 seconds left, Olson hit Swords for a corner triple as time expired for a 69-64 lead after 30 minutes.
Michigan pushed its lead to seven on the opening possession of the fourth quarter, but Nebraska trimmed the lead back to five. Layups from Swords and Olson nudged the Michigan lead to nine, 77-68, forcing a Nebraska timeout with 7:56 remaining in the game.
The Huskers cut the Michigan lead to five several times down the stretch, but a second-chance layup from Sofilkanich gave Michigan an 81-74 lead with 3:21 left. The visitors got no closer the rest of the way, with Olson and Swords combining for the remaining seven points en route to the 88-76 win.
Michigan trailed by a point after 10 minutes, with Nebraska hitting four three-pointers during that time. U-M took a six-point lead, 38-32, with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter off a McKenzie Mathurin three-pointer and again with just over a minute remaining before the Huskers finished the quarter on an 8-0 spurt.
