ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team took the doubles point and won the first three singles matches to finish in straight sets, breezing to a 4-0 win over Nebraska on Friday evening (March 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
U-M jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to capture the first point of the match. It was all Michigan at the No. 1 spot, with Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones not dropping a game in a 6-0 win that lasted just 20 minutes.
Needing one more match to secure the doubles point, Michigan was down a break at No. 2 (4-2) and on serve at 3-3 at No. 3.
Michigan's No. 2 pairing of Emily Sartz-Lunde and Piper Charney delivered a 6-4 win, taking the final four games to erase the break and put a point up for Michigan.
The Wolverines took four first sets in singles action, keeping control of the team match.
Bernales picked up where she left off in doubles, dropping just two games in a clinical 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 to push the Michigan lead to 2-0.
Charney put the third point on the board behind a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Charney raced out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before Nebraska answered with a pair of games to get one of the breaks back. Charney held in the next game and broke Conley Raidt again in the ensuing game to wrap up the first set. She won the first five games of the second set, taking control en route to the 6-1 victory.
Sartz-Lunde quickly followed with the clinching point, delivering a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 to seal the team win. She broke in the final game of the first set, grabbing the 6-4 win. Sartz-Lunde won the first three games of the second set, with Nebraska countering with two straight to close the gap to 3-2. It was all Sartz-Lunde from there as the Wolverine ripped off three consecutive games to earn the straight-set win.
The remaining matches were abandoned once the team match was decided.
Michigan returns to action on Sunday (March 15), hosting Iowa at noon inside the Varsity Tennis Center. Admission to the match is free.
