ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team recorded its third straight shutout in a 4-0 victory over Iowa on Sunday afternoon (March 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan struck first, taking the doubles point in just over 30 minutes of action. All three U-M courts broke at 2-1, with courts two and three holding the break advantage the rest of the way in victories.
At court No. 2, Reese Miller and Laura Rahnel eased to the 6-2 win as the first match to finish. The Wolverines got the break at 2-1 and consolidated it in the ensuing game on Rahnel's serve. It was all Michigan from there as the duo recorded another break at 5-2 and Rahnel closed out the match in the next game.
U-M's No. 3 pair of Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde clinched the doubles point for the home team behind a 6-3 victory. Just like Miller and Rahnel, U-M broke at 2-1 with Charney holding serve in the next game to keep the break. Michigan never gave the break back, keeping the advantage the rest of the way before breaking again in the final game to seal a 6-3 victory.
Michigan quickly pushed its lead to 3-0 behind back-to-back victories from Charney and Miller that came within moments of each other. Miller finished first, recording a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. After taking the first set at 6-1, Miller won the first three games of the second set and never looked back while dropping just two games across the two sets.
Charney followed moments later with a 6-1, 6-2 win of her own at No. 2. Charney took advantage of fast starts in both sets, losing just three total games to move her Big Ten record to 3-0.
Michigan needed just one more point, with U-M taking first sets at the remaining four matches on court.
Both Jessica Bernales and Sartz-Lunde pulled out first-set wins in tiebreakers and were both a game away from putting the fourth point on the board. Iowa fought off a match point at No. 5, allowing Sartz-Lunde to close the door at No. 4.
Sartz-Lunde recorded a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win at No. 4 for Michigan's fourth and final point. After winning the final four points in the first-set tiebreaker, it was all maize and blue in the final set. Sartz-Lunde gave up just one game in the second, cruising to the straight-set win.
U-M stays at home next weekend, first hosting UCLA on Saturday (March 21) at noon.
