NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Junior Trent McFarland and Marc Weiser Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Kevin Sullivan of the University of Michigan men's track and field team have earned USTFCCCA Regional Awards, as announced by the organization Thursday (March 19). McFarland was named the Great Lakes Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year, while Sullivan was named the Great Lakes Region Men's Coach of the Year.
Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches following the conclusion of the 2026 NCAA DI Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Performances from both the NCAA Championships and the regular season were considered.
McFarland set the program mile run record with a time of 3:52.73 in January. The time ranked ninth in the NCAA this season and No. 14 on the NCAA All-Time list. He also helped set the distance medley relay program record (9:14.80) in February, the fastest time in the country and No. 3 on the NCAA All-Time All-Conditions list.
At the Big Ten Indoor Championships, the junior took home gold in the mile (4:11.03) for the second straight season and ran the 1,600-meter leg of the first-place distance medley relay (9:38.72). McFarland qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in both events, earning two First Team All-America citations. The DMR finished fourth (9:22.77), while McFarland placed third in the mile (3:59.45), recording the fastest final lap in the field at 26.35.
Sullivan, who works directly with the men's distance program, led the Wolverines to a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a tie for 26th at the NCAA Championships. The distance squad accounted for 40 of the team's 52.5 conference championship points and all 11 NCAA Championship points.
Michigan also claimed the 600-meter title at the Big Ten Championships, with graduate student Miles Brown setting the collegiate, conference and program record (1:14.67). The time ranked No. 3 in the world this season, No. 25 on the World All-Time list and No. 15 on the U.S. All-Time list.
