ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team rallied from a 2-0 deficit, winning four of the final five matches on court in a 4-3 victory over No. 10-ranked UCLA on Saturday afternoon (March 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles point and the first match to finish at No. 2, Michigan got back-to-back straight-set wins from Reese Miller at No. 4 and Laura Rahnel at No. 6 to pull level at 2-2.
Miller broke late in the first set, taking a 7-5 win. On serve at 3-2 in the second, Miller broke Kate Fakih in the next game and did not drop another in a 6-2 second-set win to get Michigan on the board.
Rahnel followed with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win at No. 5 for Michigan's second point and her first dual-match win. After dropping just two points in the breaker, it was all Rahnel in the second set as she quickly got off court for Michigan's second point of the afternoon.
UCLA pulled out a three-set win at No. 4 for the next point, taking a 3-2 lead and leaving Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde left on court for the Maize and Blue.
After dropping her second set to head to a third at No. 1, Charney won four of the first five games in the third set to take control. Both players held serve over the next four games as Charney served out the match for Michigan's third point of the afternoon.
The match at No. 5 was just entering a third set when it was the only remaining match. Sartz-Lunde forced a third set by winning six straight games after going down a set and 3-0. She broke to start the third but could not consolidate it, tying the deciding set at 1-1.
The third set remained on serve until Sartz-Lunde broke on the deuce point for a 4-3 lead. She again won on the deuce point in the next game for a 5-3 lead. In the final game, Sartz-Lunde ripped a service return winner on her first match point, wrapping up a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 win for the fourth point of the afternoon.
U-M concludes a four-match homestand Sunday (March 22) against No. 8 USC at noon. Fans are encouraged to wear blue as part of a Blue Out.
